On Sun., Sept. 8 the Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts and VFW held a flag retirement ceremony at the Ord fairgrounds. 127 American flags were brought for retirement. The Scouts and VFW folded the flags in proper form for retiring them.
The short ceremony included a poem and a reading explaining why the American flag is folded 13 times. Everyone sang America the Beautiful and The National Anthem led by Rebecca Fischer. Each scout then had the opportunity to place a flag in the fire. After each scout placed one in the fire it was open to anyone that would like to place a flag on the fire in memory of a loved one or in thankfulness for the loved ones that have dedicated their time fighting for our freedom. The group silently watched the flags burn. Then taps was sung and the scouts were dismissed.
There were 18 Girl Scouts and two Cub Scouts in attendance. The leaders that were in attendance were Judy Bower, Alicia Thomsen, Glenda Tietjens, Bri Moudry, Amber Severance, Nicole Wadas, Stacy Streff and Karen Fischer. Nathan Flessner was the Cub Scout leader present.
Mike Fischer prepared the fire pit for the flags. Carol Philbrick and Linda Hruza represented the VFW.
Another flag retirement ceremony is planned for next September in the week of 9/11.
