Felton Honored With GOAL Award
By Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital
Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital in Lincoln held its 2013 GOAL Awards luncheon on Oct. 9, and honored five patients. One of those honored was Katie Felton, 26, of Ord. Felton had been treated at Madonna for Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS).
Felton's tumultuous journey to Madonna began in the summer of 2011when a case of the West Nile virus turned into ARDS. She was taken to St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island, then transferred to the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha. Doctors saved her life from the typically fatal condition, but she was left with a long and arduous road of rehabilitation ahead of her.
A message on Facebook from a Madonna nurse encouraged the Feltons to look into the hospital's esteemed rehab program. Katie entered Madonna unable to walk and effectively care for herself without assistance. According to Maddona, she spent five months with the facility receiving "intensive inpatient rehabilitation reclaiming her life". When she took her first steps, her supporting team of therapists gave her an emotional ovation for working hard through the pain and adversity.
"Nobody wants Katie to succeed more than Madonna does," her mother, Becky, said. In Sept. of 2012, Katie was transferred to outpatient physical therapy. She currently resides back in Ord.
"If I can beat the odds on this, I can do anything," Katie was quoted as saying in the GOAL Awards program.
The Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital GOAL Awards were created in 1994 to celebrate the success stories of patients who overcame tremendous odds through physical rehabilitation. Madonna says that the recipients of the award represent the nearly 6,000 patients that the hospital treats annually. Each award winner is presented with an original piece of artwork done by Nebraska artist Susan J. Brasch of Lincoln.
The other recipients of the Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital GOAL Award for 2013 were Trent Borland of Long Jack, MO; Garret Girardin of Junction City, KS; Owen Keenan of Storm Lake, IA; and Rodney Krogh of Lincoln, NE.
