Charles Alton "Chuck" Rienks, 78, of Lakeland, FL, died Mon., Apr. 29, 2013 after a valiant, short battle with cancer.

A memorial service will be held Fri., May 3 at 11 a.m. at the Lake Gibson United Methodist Church. A memorial service will be held in North Loup, NE, at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Lake Gibson United Methodist Church, God Shepard Hospice of Lakeland and the American Legion Post 285 of North Loup, NE. Send condolences to

Chuck was born Jan. 27, 1935 in South Bend, IN, to Richard and Blanche (Holderbaum) Rienks. He was the fourth of seven children in addition to three of his aunts and uncles that his parents raised as siblings. He attended South Bend Central High School where he played all-state football. After his parents bought a farm outside of Niles, MI, he played all-state football at Edwardsburg High School and excelled in academics and athletics.

Chuck joined the Navy serving on the USS Bashaw submarine based in Pearl Harbor, HI. He was fond of the memory of sitting off the coast of Russia submerged for 20 days. After four years of service, he returned to study at Michigan State University.

In 1961 he married Elizabeth Ann Schwinkendorf. To this union three children were born, Melanie, Douglas and Charlene. He moved his family to Nebraska and began Rienks Electric serving as an electrician. He met Betty Leggett in Ord and they were married in 1976. After moving a few times they settled close to his home on Juno Lake in Edwardsburg, MI. They retired to North Loup, NE to be closer to his children and grandchildren. Betty died. He reunited with his high school sweetheart and moved to Florida to be with her. He married Ann Marie Padbury Harp Mar. 14, 2009. They enjoyed their time visiting family, traveling and dining out. They shared their love for the Lord at Lake Gibson United Methodist Church. He was a member of the North Loup American Legion Post and Dixie Land Lions Club.

Survivors include his wife, Ann of Lakeland, FL; his children, Melanie (Lloyd) Olson of Broken Bow, Doug (Linda) of Lincoln, and Charlene Smith of Albin, WY, stepson, Shawn Leggett of Kearney, stepdaughters, Laura Abernathy of Ft. Myers, FL and Lisa (Paul) Schifferer of Elgin, IL; brothers, Mike (Mary) Rienks, and David (Debra) Rienks and a sister, Kathy (Philip) Wilson; six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Janet Rienks, two sisters and a brother-in-law, Joan Gearhart and Helen and Bob Gibson, and his wife, Betty.
