Glen Dean Hawley, 77, of rural North Loup, NE died on Tues., May 7, 2013, at the Heritage Living Center in St. Paul.
Mr. Hawley's wishes were to be cremated. A Celebration of Life was held at 2 p.m. on Fri., May 10 at the Scotia High School Gymnasium in Scotia with Pastor Bruce Phillip officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date. Karen Wieskamp and Susan Hawley were the musicians and pallbearers were his grandchildren. Ord Memorial Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
In lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to the North Loup United Methodist Church or to a scholarship fund for North Loup-Scotia students.
Glen was born Aug. 18, 1935, at Comstock, NE, to Kenneth and Martha (Nelson) Hawley. He grew up in the Comstock and Arcadia areas where he received his education and graduated from Arcadia High School. He continued his education at Kearney State College where he received a Bachelor's Degree in 1957 and Master's Degree in 1963. He worked his way through college as the chief cook and bottle washer at the Plainview Steak House in Kearney. Upon graduation he managed the steakhouse for five years.
On Aug. 29, 1955, he married Nancy Hanes at Arcadia. To this union three sons were born.
In 1962, he began his career in school administration with his first position as principal at Belgrade. In 1964, he assumed the position of principal at North Loup-Scotia. The following four years he served as principal with additional duties as Activities Director, varsity football coach, junior high basketball coach, and teaching driver's education and biology. He served as the principal at Sargent from 1968 to 1971 and Litchfield from 1971 to 1974.
In 1974, the family moved south of North Loup where they farmed. In the fall of 1975, he became the principal at North Loup-Scotia where he remained for 23 years and retired in May of 1998.
Glen's first wife, Nancy died January of 1989. On July 6, 1990, he married Karen (Hinrichs) Sich at North Loup. The couple made their home on the farm south of North Loup.
Glen was a member of the North Loup United Methodist Church and served as the Trustees Chairman on the Administrative Council. He was a man of strong faith. He enjoyed and took much pride in his Registered Angus cattle herd. He was an avid Husker football fan.
Survivors include his wife, Karen of rural North Loup; two sons and two daughters-in-law, Steven and Corinne Hawley of North Loup and Timothy and Amelia Hawley of Grand Island; three step sons and their spouses, Michael and Nancy Sich of Omaha, Daniel and Stacie Sich of Ansley and John Sich of Cozad; four grandchildren; 10 step grandchildren; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Jerry and Bonita Hawley of Gretna, Gene and Jean Hawley and Jim Hawley, all of Arcadia; three sisters and one brother-in-law, Pauline Evans of San Ramon, CA, Evelyn Goeman of Mesa, AZ, and June and Delbert Drake of Arcadia.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Nancy, and his son, Michael Hawley.
